Hurricane Relief for Mayan Village in Guatemala

The sun finally came out a few days ago over a Mayan village in Guatemala after weeks of hurricane rains swept away 50 homes, leaving 300 people destitute. Shocked and desperate, the people woke up on a church’s concrete floor, praying for a miracle.

The miracle came from one of them - a remarkable young woman named Roxana Botón, who is using our donations to build each family a house for only $500!

So far, we have raised enough money to build 5 houses, but that leaves 45 still to go, and our fundraising has slowed. We - they - desperately need you to step up with whatever you can give, and spread the word about how a handful of dollars to us is everything to them.

But that’s only part of this story about Roxana, her family, and the village of Cunen.

Nearly 50 years ago I worked in Cunen as a volunteer with AYUDA - building homes and a school - and returned as a journalist in 1985 during the revolution just minutes after a 14-year-old boy was shot dead by a soldier in front of the church. After the funeral, his father told me that he had been working in cornfields like a dog all his life to make enough money to send the boy off to college. Imagine! A Maya boy going to college.
